Pioneer Awards Honor Hendrick Hudson and North Rockland
April 3, 2003
The Haverstraw Stony Point Central School District was recognized for its commitment to bringing the Waterford Early Learning program to elementary students and for bringing web based communications to the middle and high school learning communities through eChalk. In each of these instances the district recognized a leading educational technology and made the commitment to provide professional development and district leadership so that the technology really made a difference to the learning community. Neary Elementary School's award for Best Practices from the Waterford Institute is a reflection of the level of commitment to educational technology in the North Rockland School District.
Hendrick Hudson - Joan Thompson, Superintendent
The Hendrick Hudson School District was recognized for its commitment to better instruction through an understanding of its student data. It was in early 1997 when the district came to the LHRIC with a request to collect as much data about students as possible and make that available to administrators and eventually teachers. Today, this concept has become a reality whereby the district is able to provide timely information about the district, the school buildings and especially the children to administrators, guidance counselors, principals and teachers. The focus never wavered from helping children to improve learning and teachers to further teaching.
Hendrick Hudson’s vision was revolutionary for its time and sparked a data warehouse effort throughout the state of New York and the country at large. They have shown the true spirit of the pioneer; taking risks early in the game, but always looking ahead to the future.
